Richard hands over a cheque to TFSR

Richard Bird called on Tools for Self-Reliance in Windermere to present a cheque for £350. This was half the proceeds of the very successful K Shoes Male Voice Choir Concert at Heversham. The other £350 was for The Rotary Foundation.

Chairman of the Windermere group of TFSR, John Mullen, accepted the cheque. The charity collects and refurbishes tools which are sent to Africa to enable individuals and communities to start their own businesses. Donations are used for transporting the tools to Africa and providing basic training. Our club has held a collection of tools in Kendal.

Kids Out 2016

Earlier in June the Rotary Club of Kendal organised their annual ‘Kids Out’ day for Sandgate School.  All the school pupils, teachers and helpers are taken to Lakeside and then transported by one of the Windermere steamers along the lake and down to ‘Brockhole’.  Here they are provided with a cooked lunch and allowed to play and roam in the grounds before being taken back to school in the afternoon.

This event coincides nicely with the retirement of the existing President and with the inauguration of the new incoming one.

This was done in July and the now Past President Martin Jayne handed over the reins to new President Peter Smith. It was at this event that a ‘Paul Harris Fellowship’, presented for outstanding service to Rotary and the local community, was awarded to Past President David Poole who has served the club faithfully for over 20 years.

At the meeting of the 20th June 2016 the Committee Chairmen of the 2016-17 Rotary year presented their programmes for the year ahead.  These included the development of a satellite club to provide an alternative meeting time and format that would be more attractive to younger people.

The meeting was attended by Assistant Governor Richard Attenborough who reviewed the proposals and undertook to support the club whenever possible.

Chestnut Events - Update

Jan Quinn & Sam Willacy from Chestnut EventsThe speakers at the meeting of the Rotary Club of Kendal on 27th June were Jan Quinn and Sam Willacy, from ‘Chestnut Events’, who gave us an update on their Charity and how their successful Lottery application grant was being used.

They are now working with many local schools and community groups by providing volunteers and professionals to help set up garden projects. So successful are these gardens that many schools are using the vegetables to provide fresh soup for the pupils at lunch time.

They have also been working with Westmorland General Hospital to re-vitalise the central garden space for the benefit of staff and patients.

A Career in Trading Standards

The speaker at the meeting of the Rotary Club of Kendal on 13th June was one of our own members, Past President Pat Hutchinson, who gave a talk on her career working for trading standards in Bedfordshire.

She regaled us with stories both serious and humorous about her involvement with the various cases she handled whilst there.

The case of the ‘blow up doll’ which would not stand upright, and the purchaser who then wanted his money back was one case in point. Suffice to say he did not get his money back!
